The School of Nursing

There were three Schools of Nursing within the old West Cheshire Hospital Management Committee and later Chester Health Authority.

Acute Unit: Based at Chester City Hospital in Nightingale Block Nurses Home and

Mental Health Unit: Based at Moston Hospital and also West Cheshire Hospital.
Maternity Unit: Base on the first floor of The Maternity Block.

Bache Hall also had many uses over the years and is now a School. During the Mid 1980s the schools were amalgamated and a new school on a much larger scale was open in the West Cheshire Hospital Staff Home.

Early in the 1990s the School of Nursing was taken over by Chester College of Higher Education as part of the new Health Service Teaching Unit for Cheshire and Wirral. All the existing hospital teaching facilities were now transferred to the new college complex in Parkgate Road.

At that time this building was taken over by The College School of Midwives that was transferred from the Maternity. After nearly 10 years the building was closed down to be demolished. At present this school is based in temporary accommodation
at the West Cheshire Hospital old Administration Block until the new school is opened at Bache Hall, a large Georgian Building with an number of 2(1” century extensions that were build on a piecemeal basis.

In around 1991 Chester Health Authority sold Bache Hall (A Georgian House) adjacent the Maternity Block on Countess Way to Lillian Maund Hair & Beauty centre (Beauty Consultants). Before that it was use by the Mental Health Unit as a small hospital. It was sold to Chester Colleage in 2002 for the new School of Midwifery as a replacement of the old Staff Home School. The Head of the School in 2003 is Sanda West. It is opening during 2003.

The old School of Nursing

This was located on the Countess of Chester Health Park - this was demolished in 2001 along with the staff tennis courts, bowling green and social club to make way for a new Mental Health Unit.
